Payments Demystified v1: Introduction
Post 1: Why payments matter, why issuing is underrated, and what you’ll get from following along
Why I’m Writing This
Every day, billions of card transactions happen — coffee runs, Uber rides, streaming subscriptions — and behind each one is a complex system most people never see.
I’m passionate about this stuff. My reason for writing is simple: to share what I know and help more people understand why this system matters.
Over the past 8+ years, I’ve worked across both acquiring and issuing at companies like PayPal, Marqeta, Cash App, and Square. As a product leader, I’ve built infrastructure that moves money, taught teams how it works, and advised on everything from banking-as-a-service setups to full-blown direct integrations.
Here’s what I’ve learned: Issuing is one of the most fascinating, fastest-evolving parts of payments — but it’s also one of the least understood. This series is my attempt to change that.
Why Issuing Deserves the Spotlight
When most people think of payments, they don’t really know where to start.
But what actually happens when you buy something in-store, send money to a friend, or earn points on a purchase? Who decides if your transaction is approved? How does the money move from Point A to Point B?
That’s issuing. And over the last decade, it’s transformed:
Neobanks can spin up card programs in weeks instead of years.
Gig economy platforms can push wages instantly to a driver’s card.
Corporate expense platforms can issue virtual cards on demand with custom limits.
Understanding payments isn’t just for banks anymore — it’s for founders, operators, developers, and curious consumers. The more you understand how it works, the better you can connect your role to the bigger ecosystem.
What to Expect from This Series
Payments Demystified is for anyone who wants to understand the mechanics, players, opportunities — or simply what happens when you tap your card at a merchant.
We’ll cover:
The big picture — How money moves and where issuing fits in.
Who’s who — Issuers, BIN sponsors, processors, networks, and more.
The card itself — Physical, virtual, EMV, tokenized, BIN ranges.
Digital wallets — How Apple Pay, Google Pay, and others integrate with issuing.
Real-world use cases — From embedded finance to instant payouts.
I’ll keep it simple without dumbing it down — breaking down complex concepts into plain language, supported by diagrams and real-world examples.
Why Listen to Me?
I’ve built and led payments products for years — at scale, in production, moving real money. I’ve worked with payment processors, card networks, banks, and fintechs, and have seen both the traditional way of doing things and the API-first revolution that’s changing everything.
I’m here to share what I know so you can learn and build smarter, faster, and with fewer “I wish I’d known that” moments.
